A home for Sri Vinayagar in Melbourne

In 1989 a small group of devotees set out to build the first Vinayagar temple in Victoria. A granite Vinayagar blessed by the Kanchi Sankaracharya travelled from Kancheepuram to a family home in Templestowe, and on 11 October 1992 he was consecrated in his own temple on Mountain Highway, The Basin.

Today the temple is home to Sri Vinayagar, Siva, Ambal, Murugan, Durga, Hanuman and the Navagrahas. It celebrates every major Hindu festival, and is the only temple whose Thaer (chariot) is taken out through the streets of Melbourne.
